The first two points in the thumbnail slide (use fpm; lay down specific config later) are exactly what we did when I was at Electric Imp.

…except that the specific config was also packaged as a .deb file, and I hand-wrote a make-config-deb script that wedged together just enough to keep dpkg -i happy.
