Etsy just posted a job on Devtalk (link) and my first thought was that Erlang or another BEAM language would be a good fit for them since they’re quite a high-traffic site.
Have you ever thought similar? Any well known/popular sites or apps you think would be a good fit for Erlang?
Almost all of them. The backend of current sites are shockingly complex.
There is probably a good chance for an Erlang solution in the area of web push connections. For instance, if you look at the pricing scheme for Microsofts Web PubSub. Something build in Erlang running on a $5 VPS would already blow it out of the water. The limits are staggering. They have a max of 1000 concurrent connections per node. Other offerings in this area have similar limits (Pusher, Pubnub, …)
Sometimes I’m tempted to setup something myself. Zotonic has used web push connections from the beginning. Nowadays it is even standards based via MQTT, so no lock-in.
