Aren’t those two different build systems? What do you mean ‘work with’?

Rebar3 is produced by the official Erlang team, erlang.md is maintained by the individual (many people use it), why does the official Erlang team not adopt Erlang. mk?

Just to make it clear. Rebar3 is not developed by the OTP team. The rebar3 git-repository is hosted under the Erlang project at Github but that does not mean that the OTP team is developing it. We do whoever cooperate with the rebar3 maintainers.

There is a working group “Build and packaging” in the Erlang Ecosystem Foundation which is addressing build and packaging solutions among them rebar3.
