Erlang Forums 2025 Update!

Welcome to our annual update everyone!

It’s been another busy year for Erlang and our community. You might remember that last year we mentioned that out of all the languages we track on Devtalk Erlang ranks as one of the highest in terms or number of releases, where we counted a very respectable 37 during 2023, well 2024 wasn’t much different, the core team put out another 35!

The rest of the community has been busy too, with several new libraries and plenty of project updates. We’ve also had lots of discussions on the forum, many centred around proposals and EEPs, in fact the forum served over 1.5M pages last year, that’s 25% more than the previous year!

Speaking of pageviews, Erlang’s baby, Elixir, has now served over 100M pageviews! Whether you use Elixir or not this is yet even more validation of the power of Erlang and the number of people benefiting from it. So if you’ve been umming and ahhing about creating an Erlang project, tool or library, just do it already - you’ll be in great company!

While on the topic of getting involved…

New EEF Sections

Last year we introduced a new Erlang Ecosystem Foundation category:

If you’ve been interested in the EEF or have any questions about what they do or how you can get involved drop by and start a thread - the EEF team are a friendly bunch and would be more than happy to help you with any queries… you may even be able to get some funding via their stipend program:

It is our great pleasure to announce that we have just opened our stipend program. The goal of it is to fund open source development, trainings, workshops and other initiatives that will help increase and expand the Beam community.

Check out the details here: https://erlef.org/stipends/ and the EEF’s home on the forum here: https://erlangforums.com/eef.

Let’s now move on to what we’ve got in store for you this year…

2025 Giveaways!

Will there be a Manning giveaway this year?

We’re not sure. The manager who we deal with is currently out of the office due to an unforeseen medical emergency and without an expected return date - we did try to get in touch with the person taking over their responsibilities but have not yet received a response. We’ll update this thread if we’re able to sort one out for this year.

For those of you who want even more chances to win, we have similar giveaways on the Elixir Forum and Devtalk too:

As a thank you, we have an ebook for each of our winners! We have 25 books from PragProg and 25 from Manning so if you are listed above, please PM @AstonJ with your first choice from one publisher and your second choice from the other, as well as your full name, country of residence and email address - we’ll then allocate these on a first come first serve basis :023: (They don’t have to be an Elixir book either, they can be any book so long as they are published by either PragProg or Manning.)

Forum plans for 2025

Last year we welcomed @max-au to our moderator team and this year we are hoping to take on one or two more! Keep your eye on the Forum Announcements section where we’ll post details on how to nominate people soon! We’re also hoping to do more on the project we mentioned last year so watch this space if that was of any interest to you!

Wrapping up

2024 was another fantastic year for the Erlang ecosystem. As many of you know for years Erlang was one of tech’s best kept secrets, but it is now (with the help of languages running on its VM) becoming more and more mainstream and powering more and more of the biggest apps from all across the world …just like an Erlang process, by themselves they may seem small, but together they make Erlang a force to be reckoned with! And we can’t wait to see where Erlang and its ecosystem will be 5 years from now!

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2025!
